Computer Science Report Series
Instructions for Authors and Editors

The Department of Computer Science has two report series, Series A and Series B, which are described below. Both are published and disseminated primarily in electronic form, as on-line documents.

Report Series A (Online ISSN 1795-9195; Printed ISSN 0787-6416)

This is a series of original research reports of work done in or related with the Department of Computer Science.

The reports are primarily available online (as PDF and Postscript files). They can be also ordered as printed reports from the Department Office. The University Library archives one print-copy of each report. The authors can get extra hard-copies for sending the report to the interested people. Additional hard-copies are placed on the shelf in the Department Library and reserved in the Department Office for visitors and possible inquiries.

The reports should be written tightly and in correct English, using the style of journal articles. If necessary, one can write another more extensive report, submit it to Report Series B, and refer to it. The format, in particular the cover, should follow the previously appeared reports. The report should have an abstract, to be included in the online page of abstracts, and the author(s) should propose the class of the report in the ACM classification.

The manuscript is submitted to the editor in chief of the report series (currently, in fall 2005, Pekka Kilpeläinen) for acceptance. The editorial board consists of the professors of the Department, who use other referees if necessary.

For the details following the acceptance of the report, consult the editor. The reports are numbered by the label A/yyyy/n, where yyyy is the year and n is the running number in that year. Hence A/1994/5 is the fifth report in 1994. The ISSN number of the series is 0787-6416. The editor gives the author the individual ISBN number of the report, provided by the University Library (in fall 2005, by Liisa Hassinen).

The final form of the report (as a PDF/Postscript file; PDF preferred), and the abstract (as plain-text or HTML) are submitted to the editor. The editor takes care of printing, filing and distributing the report. For network access, the following files on cs.uku.fi are updated. and the abstract to the file The report itself will be stored in files A printed copy of the report is placed in the Department Library, and a few extra copies are stored in the Department Office.

Summary:

  1. write the report using journal article style, proposing the ACM classification .
  2. submit the report (1 copy) to the editor in chief
  3. if the report is accepted to the series, the editor gives the report number and the ISBN number

  5. submit the final printed report as PDF and/or PostScript, and the abstract as a plain text file or a fragment of HTML (For examples of abstracts, see the contents of http://www.cs.uku.fi/research/publications/reports/abstracts.shtml.)
  6. the editor (with help of staff) makes print-copies in pink covers and delivers one them to the University Library and the requested number to the author(s). One copy is placed in the Department Library, and the rest are stored in Department Office for visitors and possible requests.
  7. the editor updates the index and abstract pages, and places the report files in the WWW directory of cs.uku.fi

Report Series B

The Report Series B is intended for work that is not qualified or suitable for publication in Series A, but is still worth publishing for some reason. A typical use might be the documentation of proofs, experiments or software projects that are too extensive and detailed to appear in Series A. So, a research report appearing in Series A could refer to details or implementations documented in Series B.

Reports in Series B can be written either in English or in Finnish. The editorial board of the report series consists of the professor and the senior assistants of the Department.

In short, the procedure of acceptance and publishing is the same as for the Series A, but without the ISBN number and without informing the University Library. An example cover page in LaTeX and PDF and the university logo as PDF are found in the below files:

Also, only a few of printed copies are produced for the Department Library and for the Department Office.

The accepted reports are numbered by the label B/yyyy/n, where yyyy is the year and n is the running number in that year. Hence B/2005/5 is the fifth report in 2005. The following files in cs.uku.fi are updated by the editor:
